Vocabulary
Digit: a numeral from 0-9
Expanded Form: a way to write a number to show the sum of the values of each digit. Example: 659 = 600 + 50 + 9.
Number Line: a visual aid that can be used horizontally or vertically to help with concepts such as rounding, fractions, or multiplication. In Unit 2, vertical number lines will be used for rounding. Please see the Unit 2 Letter for a visual of this method.
Place Value: the numerical value that a digit has based on its position in a number. Example: hundreds, ten-millions.
Rounding: a method used to make numbers easier to work with by determining to which prestated place value they are closest. Example 1: 8,456 rounded to the nearest hundred is 8,500. Example 2: 8,456 rounded to the nearest thousand is 8,000.
Standard Form: a way to write a number using the digits 0-9. Example: 659.
Word Form: a way to write a number using words. Example: six hundred fifty nine.
