Vocabulary
Sum: the result of adding two or more numbers
Difference: the result of subtracting two numbers
Tape Diagram: a visual method used to help solve a single or a multi-step word problem, usually involving addition or subtraction. Please see the Unit 3 Parent Letter for a visual of this method.
Bundling/making/renaming/changing/exchanging/regrouping/trading: the method of combining 10 of one place value and identifying as one of the next largest place value when adding. Example: 10 tens is 1 hundred. Please see the Unit 3 Parent Letter for a visual of this method.
Unbundling/breaking/renaming/changing/regrouping/trading: the method of identifying 1 of one place value as 10 of the next smallest place value when subtracting. Example: 1 thousand is 10 hundreds. Please see the Unit 3 Letter for a visual of this method.
