Vocabulary
Equivalent: fractions that are equal. Example: 2/3 is equivalent to 6/9.
Fraction: a number that is not a whole number, expressed in terms of a/b. Example: 3/4
Like denominator: when fractions have the same denominator, they can be compared easily, as well as being added and subtracted. Visual fraction models or number lines should be used to obtain like denominators.
Number line: a visual aid that can be used horizontally or vertically to help with concepts such as rounding, fractions, or multiplication. In Unit 6, horizontal number lines will be used to show how many parts of a whole. Please see the Unit 6 Letter for a visual of this model.
Visual fraction model: a method of illustrating fractions by dividing a shape into equal parts and shading in the number of parts indicated. Please see the Unit 6 Letter for a visual of this model.
