Vocabulary
Area model: a visual representation of multiplication that uses expanded form and the area formula. Please see the Unit 5 Letter for a visual of this method.
Array: an arrangement of objects into columns and rows
Comparison problem: a multiplication problem in which one number is a certain times more than another number; comparison bars can be used to solve these. Please see the Unit 5 Letter for a visual of the comparison bars method.
Composite number: a number that can be divided equally by a number other than itself and 1. Examples: 10, 24, 36.
Factor: numbers that can be multiplied to equal another number. Example: 1, 2, 4, 7, 14, and 28 are factors of 28.
Prime number: a number that can only be divided equally by itself and 1. Examples: 7, 19, 23.
Multiple: the product of any number and another whole number. Example: Some multiples of 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, etc.
Variable: a letter that represents an unknown number
